Line & Surface

Drawing opens my dialogue between mapping and geographic sites using collected history gathered from extended trips.  By collecting foliage, earth and using both photography and frottage along with drawings, I  build a library of information to better understand specific sites.

Working in collaboration with chance to build a surface requires a repetitive editing process of layering and erasing.  This is done until a remnant veil, a blemished surface ripe for a conversation is found, this process co-authors the landscape with my own coded mark making.  The flawed surface informs all my work.

I combine graphite, charcoal and water colour, all media that permits manipulation with water as well as erasure and layering, to produce works on paper that reflects a life long interest in landscape.

This fascination stems from my experience of being surrounded by wide open spaces, its the quietly held secrets of which I am curious to find.

BIOGRAPHY

I received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Curtin University in 2015.
Born in 1960, my early life was spent in country Victoria, we farmed in Esperance W.A for 20 years and currently I reside in Perth.
My art practice follows my early questioning of where I fit comfortably in the world,  I spend my days arranging (layering) thoughts of place, manipulating surface and line onto paper which is often large scale.  My love for European traditional 'window' landscapes ( gardens and deciduous trees) was formed in childhood.  My life in the south east of West Australia demanded I shift my focus to the greater part of Australia which comprises  of vast tracts ancient fragile earth producing remarkable landscapes.
I use collected earth and charcoal with graphite and watercolour to tell the story.   Extended trips into the bush,  with its enormous skies, weathered landscapes and bizarre plants have imprinted my memory, with a wealth of horizons and spaces to be revisited.  Layering and working with my own methodology, I am working on a growing body of work that one day I hope will reflect a journey with no end but constant line of inquiry into a layered history, making sense of  a place in time.

I have work in the Central TAFE collection and in 2017 received the Works on Paper prize in the Leonora Art Prize.
